REAVES, TROY ALBERT, WILLIAM C. HARTNER, AND JAMES EDWARD HEATH. Interstitial jluid pressure and vasomotor responses in bats. Am. J. Physiol. 226(Z) : 353-356. 1974.-Using the cottonwick technique, control values of interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) averaged 6.1 cmHz0 in Eptesicus fuscus and 12.0 cmHe0 in Myotis Zucifu~us. Maintenance of a near-normal body temperature (Tb) stabilized the IFP. During body heating, vasodilation of the wing occurred at a mean Tl, of 35.5OC in E. fuscus. Following vasodilation, the wing IFP increased an average of 5.1 cmHp0. Interstitial fluid pressure in actively struggling E. fuscus was 1.1 cmHz0 more negative than in the same bats while calm. Rats were used as a control animal for the experimental procedure. The mean IFP in albino rats was -3.9 cmHz0. A mean IFP of 5.0 cmHz0 was recorded from ground squirrels.

Bats, viruses, emerging diseases and humans
This paper reviews the unique characteristics of bats, their important roles in providing ecosystem services, their viruses in relation to emerging diseases. Bats, as flying mammals, are the second largest order following rodents, with a wide variety (over 1400 identified species among 230 genera of 21 families in the world) due to their flying power and echolocation. Despite their importance a...
متن کاملInterstitial fluid pressure as a prognostic factor in cervical cancer following radiation therapy.
PURPOSE To investigate tumor interstitial fluid pressure as a prognostic factor for recurrence-free survival in patients with cervical cancer following radiation therapy. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN Tumor interstitial fluid pressure was measured in 55 cervical cancer patients who received radiation therapy between August 1998 and September 2002. Interstitial fluid pressure measurements were made befo...
متن کاملMolecular and Cellular Pathobiology Mild Elevation of Body Temperature Reduces Tumor Interstitial Fluid Pressure and Hypoxia and Enhances Efficacy of Radiotherapy in Murine Tumor Models
Human and rodent solid tumors often exhibit elevated interstitial fluid pressure (IFP). This condition is recognized as a prognostic indicator for reduced responses to therapy and decreased disease-free survival rate. In the present study, we tested whether induction of a thermoregulatory-mediated increase in tissue blood flow, induced by exposure of mice to mild environmental heat stress, coul...
